Electricity

Welcome to AGL > About AGL > Energy Sources > Electricity

AGL is one of Australia’s largest retailers of electricity. Electricity is used by households for heating, cooking, lighting, entertainment and hot water; and by commercial and industrial businesses for heating, hot water, lighting and other industrial processes.

AGL currently sells around 26 million MWh of electricity to customers in Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales (an average household uses around 7 MWh of electricity per year).

AGL is a retailer of electricity but does not own the transmission and distribution system (poles and wires) that is used to transport electricity to the end customer. Most electricity produced in Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales is sold by generators to retailers through the National Electricity Market. While AGL purchases a significant portion of its electricity through the National Electricity Market, AGL also produces electricity from a number of different types of electricity generation technologies.
